Located in a pretty brick building just a block from the Rijksmuseum, the three-star Aalders Hotel is a safe, although not terribly cheapo, pick. The hotel is ideal for those seeking a quiet getaway in the Vondelpark neighborhood.
Décor in the 32 rooms is matronly rather than trendy, with burgundy bedspreads, carpeted floors, inoffensive Amsterdam prints, and standard hotel furniture. All rooms are equipped with a TV, phone and free Wi-Fi. Some of the rooms facing the back offer nice balconies where you can enjoy a view of the lush neighborhood garden.
The cheapest rooms at the Aalders, the “small” single and double rooms, are indeed a bit of a tight squeeze, but that's largely because of the size of the beds. (Don't ask us why, but in a country with some of the world's tallest people, many of the hotels have bafflingly small beds. Not here.)
The private bathrooms are large, efficient, and recently renovated. All have a hair dryer and most have showers (some bathtubs are available).
Breakfast is included in the room rate. The Aalders has an elevator.

About the Aalders neighborhood
The most popular neighborhood outside the city center, the Museumplein is a residential area crowded with museums, parks and 19th-century buildings. The Rijksmuseum possesses an impressive collection of Dutch paintings from the 15th through the 17th centuries (including an enormous Rembrandt collection), the Van Gogh Museum is (surprise) devoted to Van Gogh, and the Stedelijk Museum houses modern and contemporary art.
