Located in a pleasant building a block from the Rijksmuseum, the three-star Aalders Hotel is a good pick for those seeking a serene, quiet getaway in the Vondelpark neighborhood.

The single and double rooms on the cheapo end of the Aalders Hotel's price range are a bit of a tight squeeze, but that's largely because of the size of the beds. (Don't ask us why, but in a country with some of the world's tallest people, many of the hotels have bafflingly small beds. Not here.)

Décor in the 28 rooms is classic and cool. Textured walls in beige-and-cream stripes offset dark carpeted floors, heavy bedspreads and pre-fab furniture. All rooms are equipped with a TV, phone and free Wi-Fi. The rooms facing the back offer nice balconies where you can enjoy a view of the lush neighborhood garden.

The private bathrooms are large and efficient and offer hair dryers.

Breakfast is included in the room rate.
