An architectural jewel that mixes Art Nouveau and cottage styles, the Atlas Hotel had us smiling before we even entered the building. Happily, there's more beneath the surface. The three-star charmer's mix of comfortable common areas and stylish rooms makes it a winner. And its close proximity to lovely Vondelpark sweetens the prize.
The Atlas Hotel’s 23 rooms are decorated in a clean and cozy style approaching "shabby chic." Oval vanity mirrors, maroon carpets and thick bedspreads are complemented by standard amenities like a TV, telephone and coffee maker. The private bathrooms are well stocked with toiletries.
In addition to singles, doubles and triples, the Atlas Hotel offers "superior" rooms, which supposedly offer better views and locations in the building (at higher rates). We don't think the splurge is necessary: An adjacent building blocks direct views of the park, and besides, the whole neighborhood is beautiful.
The Atlas Hotel has an annoying habit of charging for little extras, including luggage storage. However, the free Wi-Fi access and complimentary breakfast help.

About the Atlas Hotel neighborhood
The most popular neighborhood outside the city center, the Museumplein is a residential area crowded with museums, parks and 19th-century buildings. Museums here include the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum and the Stedelijk Museum. The Vondelpark area, a 1970s playground of sex, drugs and rock'n'roll, is now an upscale commercial full of pricey boutiques and shops.
