The two-star Chic & Basic hotel is exactly as it sounds: a simple, reasonably priced hotel with a few sleek touches. It’s located in Amsterdam's lovely Grachtengordel neighborhood.
The Chic & Basic’s 28 rooms are split between two wings. Rooms in the “vintage” wing are old-fashioned with plain furnishings and dark carpets. While these are fine, we prefer the other wing, with modern touches like hardwood floors with a light green finish, an adjustable LED light system, and headboards decorated with black-and-white photos.
Rooms on both sides are equipped with coffee and tea facilities, a TV, phone and free Wi-Fi. Only a lone single guestroom has its private bathroom placed outside the room. All other rooms have in-room facilities, most with spacious showers.
We found the stylish lounge on Chic & Basic's ground floor an ideal spot to sit and do some work before taking a stroll through Grachtengordel, one of Amsterdam’s loveliest residential neighborhoods.
Breakfast is sometimes included in the room rate (check when booking). Note: Like many other Amsterdam hotels, the Chic & Basic has steep stairs and no elevator.

About the Chic & Basic neighborhood
Grachtengordel West is an expansive area in the center of town, near the Dam and the Old Center. It's also home to gorgeous 17th-century canal houses, Westermarkt, the Homomonument, the Westerkerk (Amsterdam's grandest church and the final resting place of Rembrandt) and Anne Frank's House.
