The two-star Chic & Basic has 26 rooms divided between two wings of a building in Amsterdam's lovely residential Grachtengordel neighborhood.

One wing offers old-fashioned rooms with plain furnishings and dark carpets. The other wing sports more modern touches, including wooden floors with a light green finish, an adjustable LED light system, and headboards decorated with large, black and white photos. Rooms on both sides are equipped with cable TV, telephones, and Wi-Fi. Only a lone single guestroom doesn't have an en-suite bathroom. The bathrooms have spacious showers.

We found the stylish lounge on Chic & Basic's ground floor an ideal spot to sit and do some work before taking a stroll through Grachtengordel, one of Amsterdam’s loveliest residential neighborhoods.

Note: Like many other Amsterdam hotels, the Chic & Basic has steep stairs and no elevator.
