The one-star Hotel Aspen has a bare-bones aesthetic that perfectly reflects the hotel's straightforward purpose: providing a clean, affordable place to sleep for travelers exploring Amsterdam. We'd call it a backpacker's paradise.

The Aspen's eight rooms are spread among three floors upstairs from the hotel's creaky old lounge and reception area. Rooms offer up white sheets and duvets, have Wi-Fi, telephone, and not much else. Bathrooms are either private or shared with other rooms. If you can handle the steep stairs to the top of the building, we recommend the quad room with private facilities.

The Aspen's location on the Raadshuisstraat couldn't be better: You're at the very nexus of the Grachtengordel and the Old Center.
