Esam, owner of the Hotel Aspen, summed things up for us like this: "No TV in my hotel, it's stupid." And we agree. Who needs a television in Amsterdam? As for the fact that the Aspen doesn't serve breakfast, Esam's response is telling of the Aspen's ambiance: "Of course I don't serve breakfast," he says. "People never wake up before noon here!" Point taken.
The Aspen has eight basic, smallish rooms with stark decor and incredibly steep steps. A few have rooms have private facilities. It's is a total party place, and the super-friendly Esam is the king of the party. Located on a busy street, the Raadhuisstraat building, which houses the Aspen, is also home to four other hotels—the Pax, the Westertoren, the Nadia, and the Di-Ann.
NOTE: There's no elevator, so watch out for the stairs!
