The Hotel de Gerstekorrel provides 32 affordable two-star rooms on the Dam Straat near the train station. If your main priority is a convenient location and a clean room, this is a solid pick.
Rooms are basic, with white bedding, colorful pillows and functional, if a tad boring, furniture. All are equipped with a TV and telephone, and free Wi-Fi. Note that rooms on the front side of the hotel overlooking the bustling street below (and will be louder), which rooms on the backside will be far quieter (with views of, well, not much at all).
Private bathrooms sport shiny, clean tiles.
Breakfast is included in the room rate, and is served in a restaurant next door. Note that, like most small hotels in Amsterdam the Gertekorrel does not have an elevator (but does have steep stairs!).

About the Hotel De Gerstekorrel neighborhood
Amsterdam's (in)famous Red Light District lies within the Old Center, and is a short walk from the city's Centraal Station. True, the area is home to those notorious red windows, live sex shows and marijuana-peddling coffee shops, but it's hardly a dangerous free-for all. A heavy police presence and corner cameras keep the area safe.
As night falls, the narrow streets become increasingly crowded (and increasingly noisy) with roving gangs of happy-go-lucky tourists out for a fun night. Perhaps ironically, the Red Light District also boasts some traditional attractions, such as the Oude Kerk (The Old Church) and some cool shops.
