Note: During the summer of 2008, the Hotel de la Haye renovated and rechristened itself the "BackStage Hotel." The new name reflects the hotel's adopted musical theme, and its proximity to various theaters and concert venues. Rooms are now equipped with fashionable amenities, like LCD TVs and iPod docking stations.
We have not yet visited the renovated hotel, and thus, present our review of its former incarnation, the Hotel de la Haye:
---
Sitting on the corner of the bustling, commercial Leidsegracht and the Singel canal, the Hotel de la Haye offers 22 standard rooms at varying prices. With double rooms that run from €60-110 (with private facilities), the hotel's value is somewhat difficult to determine. Are the rooms worth €65? Sure. €110? Keep looking.
Built in the 1890s, the building became a hotel in the 1950s, though traces of its past remain. During recent lobby renovations, the owners discovered the lovely original wooden floors dating from when the space was a dance school. Carefully restored, it's a welcome addition to the hotel.
Upstairs, rooms are awfully mundane. Don't get us wrong, they're acceptable and have some attractive fabrics and carpets, but they just felt tired to us. We wish that the management, who also runs the Art Gallery Hotel in Museumplein, would give the rooms the same attention that they have given to the reception.
Fifteen rooms face the loud Leidsegracht, while seven overlook the Singel canal. Three large family rooms are located along the corner, two of which open to a balcony.
