Situated along the lovely Leidsegracht canal in the heart of the Grach South neighborhood, the Hotel de Leydsche Hof is another family-run gem, offering five rooms with contemporary flair.
Peter Piller and his family live on the first two floors of the house and rent out rooms on the third and fourth floors. The Piller's have been running the Leydsche Hof since 1970, though the 17th-century canal house has been a hotel since the end of World War II. The budget hotel got a makeover in 2005, with all new bathrooms, lighting, furniture, painting, and carpets.
The result is both sumptuous and charming. Three rooms face the lovely back garden area ("You have no idea how many birds are here," Peter says. "It's a forest for them!"). And two lucky rooms look out to the picturesque canal. Leydsche Hof doesn't have a lot of amenities, but rooms are surprisingly spacious and lovingly appointed with antique dressers, comfortable sitting chairs, oversized beds, chandeliers, and large closets. Original paintings and cool framed prints decorate the walls, including fashion designs done by Peter's daughter Louise during her art school years.
NOTE: There's no elevator, and the stairs are steep.
