Hotel Keizershof

When we visited the Hotel Keizershof, Hanneke De Vries told us, "This is really a family place. We keep it all in the family." Indeed, the family vibe is palpable at this sweet two-star hotel, run by the same clan since 1959. That means good rates, a classy feel and a laidback, quirky atmosphere that will easily win over families looking for a quiet, unique place to stay.

The Hotel Keizershof’s four rooms, each named and decorated around a classic Hollywood movie star, are located on the top floor of a picture-perfect Dutch townhouse. All are spacious and the furniture is classic: small wooden cabinets, simple beds, and wall art falling somewhere on the post-Impressionist spectrum.

There is little to speak of amenity-wise, but the rooms do offer views, either of the canals or the Keizershof’s own garden. (We like the “Charlie Chaplin” room, overlooking a sumptuous slice of Amsterdam canal life.) Rooms do not have televisions, but there is a common TV lounge.

Bathrooms are nothing special, but they're clean and they do the job. Rooms are equipped with private showers, but some share the hall toilet.

Location-wise, the Hotel Keizershof is tops: You're between the Leidsestraat and the Vijzelgracht, so many of the city's sights and amenities are right outside your door. And history buffs will enjoy knowing that the 17th-century building, designed by famed French architect Jean Godin, was a frequent stop for the Dutch Royal family in the early 20th century.

Breakfast is included in the room rate. Be warned that the stairs are steep enough to frighten a seasoned Alpinist, and the layout of the historic building is confusing.
