The three-star Hotel Nicolaas Witsen is conveniently located near the Albert Cuyp market and the Heineken brewery. We love proprietors like Alex Rosendal, who let the 28 modern and comfortable guest rooms speak for themselves before telling us about his elaborate future plans for the place.
About those rooms: Red is the color of choice, gracing carpets and bedspreads. The furniture is simple, and photos on the walls depict classic Amsterdam themes (think boats and flowers). All rooms are equipped with free Wi-Fi and a flat-screen TV. Rooms at the front of the hotel look out on a quiet street, while rooms in back offer views of a neighborhood garden.
The private bathrooms are modern, with white-tiled walls. Some have bathtubs (ask ahead).
Breakfast, included in the room rate, is served in the Witsen's bar, where you can also stop for a drink after a day out sightseeing.

The most elegant area within the city center, Grachtengordel South features opulent residences, mansion-lined streets and a hot nightlife scene. The area boasts both Rembrandtplein (the city's one-time butter market) and Leidseplein (a former horse and buggy drop-off point). Both squares have been reborn as hot spots for bars, clubs, restaurants and no small number of tourist traps.
