Situated in the heart of Amsterdam in a long brick building that houses several other cheap sleeps (many of which are reviewed here), the one-star Hotel Pax is ideal for youngish travelers looking for an inexpensive room with a touch of decorative flair.
As with the other hotels in the building, you enter the Pax to an almost laughably steep staircase. However, the Pax’s owners, the friendly brothers Philip and Pieter, have painted theirs bright green and outfitted it with a trippy array of gold-framed mirrors. It certainly offers an interesting opportunity for reflection.
The 11 guestrooms are in pretty good shape. Most have benefited from some punchy wallpaper, and we think that all will be fine for unfussy travelers willing to overlook a scuff or two on the wall. Rooms are equipped with a work desk, mini-fridge, free Wi-Fi and a cable TV. Some rooms offer garden views, while the rooms facing the front of the hotel offer balconies with views of the bustling scene outside (light sleepers should ask for a garden facing room).
Half of the rooms are equipped with private bath, while the other (cheaper) half share baths in the hallways.

About the Hotel Pax neighborhood
Grachtengordel West, also called the "Western Canal Ring," is an expansive area in the center of town, near Dam Square and the Old Center. The neighborhood is home to gorgeous 17th-century canal houses, along with some of the city's most interesting sights, including the Westermarkt, the Homomonument, the Westerkerk (Amsterdam's grandest church and the final resting place of Rembrandt) and Anne Frank's House.
