Of all the hotels in the famous art nouveau Raadhuisstraat building (including the Di-Ann, Nadia, Westertoren, and Aspen hotels), the Hotel Pax wins our vote for "most relaxed."
After climbing up a woefully steep, mirror-lined staircase, you'll reach the Pax's reception area. Host Pieter gave us our return tour. Each of its eight recently redecorated rooms is done up in vibrant colors. Furniture is still a hodge-podge of old and new, but the overall effect is cozy, like you're staying in a friend's guest room. Large windows help give this small place an airy feel. You might hear street traffic at night, so light sleepers should ask for rooms in the back.
Whatever the Pax lacks in amenities—private bathrooms, for instance—it makes up for in personality.
