Located in a pretty Art Deco building adjacent to Dam Square, the three-star Rho Hotel offers 170 rooms in the heart of old Amsterdam. The lobby and reception area, which were formerly part of a theater, still sport the red-carpet floors and charm that recall the building's dramatic past.
Rooms at the Rho Hotel have low ceilings and basic wooden work desks. Curtains and bedding come in shades of red, and the occasional piece of abstract art hangs on the wall. Amenities include a TV, phone, mini fridge and free Wi-Fi. The private white-tiled bathrooms are basic and efficient.
Note that while we like the Rho's location and cool history, its rates are just too expensive for our Cheapo hearts. If, however, the price is right for you, we'd certain encourage you to consider it. It would make a very convenient home base.

About the Rho Hotel neighborhood
Amsterdam's (in)famous Red Light District lies within the Old Center, and is a short walk from the city's Centraal Station. True, the area is home to those notorious red windows, live sex shows and marijuana-peddling coffee shops, but it's hardly a dangerous free-for all. A heavy police presence and corner cameras keep the area safe.
As night falls, the narrow streets become increasingly crowded (and increasingly noisy) with roving gangs of happy-go-lucky tourists out for a fun night. Perhaps ironically, the Red Light District also boasts some traditional attractions, such as the Oude Kerk (The Old Church) and some cool shops.
