Ruth, one energetic and eager-to-please woman, tends to just about everything at The Greenhouse Effect, a hotel with accompanying coffee shop and bar in the heart of the Red Light District.
We first met Ruth across the street from the hotel at The Greenhouse Effect Bar, which, aside from serving an all-day happy hour for hotel guests, doubles as the reception. Here, along with hemp beer, you'll find a photo album of the GHE's 15 themed rooms and five themed apartments with names such as Red Man, Turkish Delight, China Town, and 1001 Arabian Nights.
The GHE is housed in a 17th-century brick building with steep stairs. We poked around an apartment with modern decor, simple furniture, a Keith Herring print, and gleaming kitchen. Cheapos will appreciate the three rooms with shared facilities: two doubles and a single. The effect? Clean rooms, a young vibe, and Red Light locale make this the spot for fastidious partiers.
The Internet station is free. Breakfast includes eggs and ham. And none of the rooms are non-smoking. However, Ruth asks that tokers keep the windows open. Smiling, she "complained" about having to turn off the fire alarm in the middle of the night -- ah, the Red Light District!
