From the Carolina hotel, traveling by foot to most Athens tourist sites is effortless, as this family-operated hotel is situated between Monastiraki and Syntagma Square.
We appreciated the Carolina's old-fashioned cage elevator, reminiscent of the late 19th century. (Dont worry, its safe!). And we loved the roof terrace, which made us feel like we were on top of the world.
Rooms come with wood furniture. Headboards and bedside tables are accented with electric, cobalt blue accents that harmonize nicely with the wine-red curtains and intricately patterned bedspreads. En suite bathrooms are done in gray-and-white tile and silver fixtures. Toiletries are included.
Some rooms have unbelievable terraces—huge and inviting. It may require a dose of daily conviction to get yourself away from the terrace and out the door.

About the Carolina Hotel neighborhood
Surrounding Monastiraki Square, the neighborhood of Monastiraki ranks next to Plaka as a top tourist neighborhood. It spans the gamut from high-end international retail chains on Ermou to low-tech individual entrepreneurs selling their wares on Monastiraki Square. Monastiraki includes the last remaining mosque in Athens from Turkish times, Hadrian's Library, the bottom of Ermou Street, the Roman Agora, and Tower of the Winds. Charming alleyways cut across Monastiraki as well, providing a nice escape from the steady tourist traffic. Some of the best gyro and souvlaki joints in all of Athens can be found here. The neighborhood is served by the eponymous Monastiraki metro station.
