Located on a short pedestrian street right next to Omonia Square, Alma is adjacent to the busy metro station. The immediate neighborhood is not thrilling, though pleasant corners of the Omonia Square area and, further afield, more charming 'hoods are not far away.
Is Alma a good deal? The answer to this question depends on your priorities. The hotel will not charm you aesthetically, though its rates are extremely good.
Rooms are uninspired though clean. Alpine-reminiscent detailing on the furniture seems better suited for a discount Swiss lodge than an Athenian one. Adhesive-tiled floors are a bit worse for wear. Peach comforters look serviceable, even if they remind us of an unfortunate early 1990s wine cooler experience. But at least Alma's bathrooms set showers apart with raised barriers and a shower curtain. Most Athens budget hotel bathrooms, rather unfortunately, maintain no distinction between the shower space and the rest of the bathroom.

About the Alma neighborhood
The gritty transit and commercial hub of Omonia Square is not Athens at its most quaint and ancient. In architectural terms, Omonia is other than charming. But there are plenty of quirky, even inspiring aspects of the area around Omonia Square. For one, there are oodles of ethnic restaurants and immigrant retail shops, giving the area a bit of an international vibe. There's also the mindblowing Central Market, featuring stall upon stall of a dizzying range of goods. While Omonia is a convenient 'hood for cheap sleeps and international fare, keep in mind the area can get a bit sketchy at night.
