We have mixed feelings about including Golden City in our listings, largely because the discrepancy between its online rates and its rack rates is so massive. At their best, the former are reasonable; the latter, however, sail well over our maximum.
With that out of the way, we're free to discuss the hotel itself. Golden City is a big tourist hotel with 91 rooms. We got the impression that it accommodates lots of groups. If you were to tell us that a few busloads of tourists from Montpellier departed just prior to our visit, we wouldn't have batted an eye.
Rooms surprised us with their elegance. We like the dark tones of the bedrooms, especially the dark wood headboards, the refined green and yellow curtains, and the small but inviting balconies. Bathrooms appear to have been very recently renovated, with plain tiling and stylish clear glass panels aligned with the edge of the bathtub. Wireless Internet access is available (for a fee) on the top three floors only. Those needing their Web fix can use the Internet station in the lobby, also for a fee.
Golden City sits near Omonia Square, on the edge of a rough area. Athens is not a dangerous city, and this should pose no problem to cautious visitors, but it is a logistical fact. The ground level encompasses a friendly café well situated on a corner to allow great views of street-level action.
