The Metropolis is one of our absolute Athens faves. It's ultraclean and run by an amazingly charming fellow named Tomas.
By now you should know that when we bestow EuroCheapo fave status on a hotel this means, first and foremost, that it has low rates and a friendly vibe. Metropolis has both of these; however, it's not a place rich in aesthetics. Rooms have beige walls, run-of-the-mill beds, wardrobes, bedspreads, and desks, all of which serve their utilitarian purposes without bothering themselves with style. Rooms are also extremely clean.
The art deco exterior is bedecked with a multistory wall of lush bougainvillea. Several balconies consequently feel like gardens, and potted plants accompany bougainvillea clusters. The cool art deco style of the exterior extends to the cute little peach-and-cream reception area, tucked into a marble stairway.
The supercool just-out-of-university Taiwanese couple we pestered in the lobby fell over themselves as they effusively offered positive comments about the Metropolis and Tomas. We have to second their take on both, and heartily recommend it to a post-backpacker crowd.
