Located close to the heart of Monastiraki and Plaka, Hotel Attalos is a good tourist value. Unlike many of the hotels constructed just in time for the 2004 Olympics (as well as some older hotels renovated for the same purpose), Attalos is a relaxed throwback to the 1970s. It's less shiny than it is dependable, a fact reflected in the hotel's clientele. Middle-aged and up, the Attalos demographic includes plenty of seniors and small groups.
Attalos's 80 rooms are pretty unremarkable. Walls are unadorned save for the framed reproductions of mythological figures. Bed units are basic. Amenities are standard and plain. Hallmarks include the rooftop bar and terrace and the funky, retro lounges found on several floor landings.
Rooms toward the back are away from the street noise on busy thoroughfare Athinas and have roomy balconies as well.

About the Hotel Attalos neighborhood
Surrounding Monastiraki Square, the neighborhood of Monastiraki ranks next to Plaka as a top tourist neighborhood. It spans the gamut from high-end international retail chains on Ermou to low-tech individual entrepreneurs selling their wares on Monastiraki Square. Monastiraki includes the last remaining mosque in Athens from Turkish times, Hadrian's Library, the bottom of Ermou Street, the Roman Agora, and Tower of the Winds. Charming alleyways cut across Monastiraki as well, providing a nice escape from the steady tourist traffic. Some of the best gyro and souvlaki joints in all of Athens can be found here. The neighborhood is served by the eponymous Monastiraki metro station.
