The one-star Hostal Noya is a bare-bones, rock-bottom budget place if ever there was one. That said, its very low rates and views of Plaça Catalunya and La Rambla make it a hard-to-come-by deal in Barcelona.

The 10 rooms are simple and old, but not necessarily in a bad way. Noya is very tidy, and while the overall aesthetic may be a bit tarnished, it’s a cozy place. It is not, however, a place where modern comforts abound. The spartan rooms do not have TV or air conditioning (fans are provided). They do have free Wi-Fi, though, and some have balconies with views of La Rambla.

Bathrooms at Noya are much like rooms: circa 1960 and scruffy, albeit clean. Bathrooms are shared and all rooms have hand sinks and mirrors.

For all its simplicity, the hotel has some darling touches that Felisa, the proprietor, has tended to over the years. Picture doily-clad furniture, vases of silk rosebuds and the bright red geraniums on a few of the balconies.

The Noya’s location on Plaça Catalunya really couldn’t be more central. The Catalunya Metro stop is clearly visible from the hotel’s balconies, as are all major bus stops and the Airport Bus stop. Shopping, eating and drinking are available in overwhelming quantities all around the hotel, and all major tourist destinations are a Metro stop or a five-minute walk away.
