The one-star Hostal Noya is a bare-bones, rock-bottom budget place if ever there was one. That said, its very low rates and views of Plaça Catalunya and Las Ramblas make it a hard-to-come-by deal in Barcelona.

Quick Read

Pros: Central and easy to reach. Super-Cheapo. Sweet and homey. Nice view.

Cons: Rooms pick up street noise. Area is touristy and pricey. A bit worn. No online booking. No elevator.

Rooms

The Hostal Noya’s 10 guest rooms are simple and old, but not necessarily in a bad way. The Noya is very tidy, and while the overall aesthetic may be a bit tarnished, it’s a cozy place. Pastel-colored walls and bedding and simple wooden furnishings give a soothing homey feel, reminiscent to a stay at the home a sweet abuelita.

The Noya is not, however, a place where modern comforts abound. The spartan rooms do not have TV or air conditioning (fans are provided). They do have free Wi-Fi, though, and some have balconies with views of the Ramblas.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms at the Noya are much like the rooms: circa 1960 and a tad scruffy, albeit clean. Bathrooms are shared ,and all rooms have a hand sink and mirror.

Hotel

For all its simplicity, the Hostal Noya has some darling touches to which Felisa, the proprietor, has tended over the years. Picture doily-clad furniture, vases of silk rosebuds and the bright red geraniums on a few of the balconies. Felisa is a friendly, nice person, and that is an attribute not easily found in big city Barcelona.

Wi-Fi is free throughout. Note that the hotel does not have an elevator.

Location

The Hostal Noya’s location on Plaça Catalunya really couldn’t be more central. Shopping, eating and drinking are available in overwhelming quantities all around the hotel, and all major tourist destinations are a Metro stop or a five-minute walk away. The airport bus departs from and drops off at Plaça Catalunya, and the Metro and taxi stop are also very close.

Drawbacks here include noise and tourist-trap style restaurants and bars, but there are a few places within walking distance from the Noya that make the cut. Tallers 76 (c/ Tallers 76) in El Raval is reasonably priced and offers a nice lunch and dinner menu. Not far from Tallers 76 is Teresa Carles (Jovellanos, 2), a vegetarian restaurant with trendy décor and tasty brunch, lunch specials and take-away.

Sightseeing is easy from the Noya’s top-of-Las-Ramblas location. It’s a brisk walk from the Gothic Quarter, the CCCB Museum, and Pssg. de Gracia’s many Gaudí buildings.

Reserving at the Hostal Noya

As we point out above, the Hostal Noya does not offer online booking. To reserve a room, you’ll have to contact the hotel directly by email or telephone (see below, under “more information”).

If you'd like a suggestion for another hotel with cheapo rates and online booking, check out our review of the Hostal Fernando, a clean, roomy spot located nearby in Barri Gotic. The Hostal Benidorm is another solid option located right on Las Ramblas.

Note: You’ll want to bust out your best Spanish when booking at the Hostal Noya, as Felisa does not speak much English.

Transportation

Subway: The Noya’s Metro line is the Green Line/L3 and its closest stop is Plaça Catalunya.

From the Airport): To reach the Noya from the airport, take the Areobús (departs every five minutes and gets you into town in 35 minutes) to Plaça Catalunya (the last stop). From here it’s a short walk to the hotel.

About the Hostal Noya neighborhood

Stretching about a mile from the port to Plaça de Catalunya, La Rambla is the ever-bustling boulevard to end all boulevards. Along with the Barri Gòtic, it represents the center of the tourist quarter—and the beating heart of the city for locals. Year-round, round-the-clock, street performers, sidewalk artists, lovers, madmen, café patrons, pickpockets and throngs of tourists ramble here.
