One nice thing about staying with a hotel chain is the complete absence of surprises. The Splendid is a reliable choice, part of the Apsis hotel group, which has nice three- and four-stars all over Europe.
The Aspis Splendid is in a nice residential area of Barcelona, on the edge of the gay barrio, and close to the university. The quiet and well-maintained convenience of this hotel makes it a great option for business travelers.
Rooms are not exactly, um, splendid, but they are very comfortable and stocked full of amenities. All rooms follow the same code of style, decorated in dark wood and navy blues, some with cute sofa beds and small living room areas. There are safes, Wi-Fi access, minibars, and televisions (with Pay-Per-View, natch) in every room, making the Splendid a perfect place to relax after a long day of sightseeing.
Decorated in peach-color stone tiles, Splendid bathrooms are sizable. All have bathtubs. The best rooms in the hotel are the front rooms with large windows looking over calle Muntaner, though none have balconies. Other rooms in the back have strange views of the less-than-attractive interior courtyard.
Splendid is a few blocks from bus and metro connections. Calle Muntaner has some nice restaurants and cafés, and the Raval, a five minute walk from the Aspis Splendid, features loads of nice restaurants. This hotel is a nice choice for those who want something quiet yet close to the city center.
