Located inside a gorgeous 18th-century building deep in the Barri Gòtic is the budget-friendly Pensión Mari-Luz, renovated in 2006. Sure, it's a bit on the small side, but that's just part of its charm. Almost all of the orderly rooms have balconies with views of the neighborhood and shared bathrooms. There are only two rooms with private baths. Plus, if you feel like trying out that new pan con tomate recipe, Mari-Luz offers a cute kitchen for all your culinary aspirations.
This pension requires a bit of work for prospective guests, as it is located on the third floor, and there's no elevator. The immediate area is made up of twisting cobblestone alleyways and is somewhat confusing. That said, if your bags aren't too heavy and you're after something special, then Mari-Luz is your kind of place.
Manning the reception is friendly and multi-lingual Simone Nuñez. He credits his wife for the many potted bright red geraniums and generally "homey" atmosphere of the pension. In fact, just like at mom's house, at Mari-Luz they'll do your laundry for you (for a mere €5.50!). Additionally, the pension also boasts Wi-Fi and guest lockers. Pensión Mari-Luz is a fun and rare find, a hostal with history, charm, and cozy ambience.
