The most notable thing about the East Side Hotel is its historic location, across the street from the former Berlin Wall. The East Side Hotel, in fact, faces the East Side Gallery, the best-preserved remnant of the wall that separated East from West, and, in this case, Friedrichshain from Kreuzberg.
The three-star East Side Hotel is housed in a lovingly restored 19th-century building that opened in 1996. Downstairs, there's a small reception, café and bar; upstairs, 36 simply-decorated rooms offer modern conveniences. All rooms feature contemporary art, and framed photographs in the hallways take you back to the final days of the Berlin Wall before the fall. As a bonus, some rooms offer views of the Spree River.
The hotel is located just on the Frederichshain side of the old divide. The U-Bahn Warschauer Strasse is located one minute from the hotel.
