Located along the charming Pariserstrasse, the Hotel Garni Austriana, Pension Insel Rugen, and Pension Curtis merged in August 2004 to form one simple and inexpensive pension, called the Hotel Austriana. Got that?
The newly combined pension is situated on three floors of a classic 19th-century apartment building and offers rooms that are charming in their simplicity. The floors have never been gut-renovated, making for original walls, interesting stucco work on the ceilings, and some surprisingly spacious doubles.
Furniture drifts toward the uninteresting, though décor is cheerful and bright. Rooms on the top floor had a much more contemporary style, although certain rooms now have private showers, rather than separate bathrooms.Downstairs in the breakfast room, the Austriana takes us to Bavaria, with charming dark wooden tables and hand-crafted wall hangings. It's a hearty way to start the day.
