The Märkischer Hof is an island of old-fashioned, no-nonsense German hospitality marooned in trendy Mitte. As long as you don’t check into this dowdy three-star expecting cutting edge design or luxurious amenities, you’ll be pleased by the reasonable rates and stunning location. The hotel is located near a tram, S-bahn, and U-bahn.
The hotel’s interior is dominated by a sad shade of peach. The rooms sport hokey leaf-patterned curtains, mauve-printed chairs, and other outdated touches. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the spotlessly clean rooms and en suite bathrooms are mostly quiet despite the non-stop action outside.
A lavish, all-you-can-eat buffet is laid out for guests every morning in the breakfast room. (The owner is so proud of the excellent spread that he wanted us to stop by at 7 AM to behold it in its untouched glory; we told him we’d take his word for it.)
If hunger strikes, queue up at Dada falafel next door, our favorite Middle Eastern joint in town. Otherwise, you should resist the temptation to patronize the mediocre and tourist-trappy restaurants on Oranienburgerstrasse. There are better ways to maximize your Euros on nearby Linenstrasse, Auguststrasse, and Torstrasse.
Note: Be aware that the reception staff may not converse much "auf Englisch."

About the Hotel Märkischer Hof neighborhood
Once the heart of East Berlin, Mitte was the former East Germany's showcase hood. With the grand Unter den Linden boulevard running right through it, Mitte's grand buildings, government offices (including the awe-inspiring Reichstag), major museums, embassies, and side streets are undeniably majestic. On the north side of Mitte, cool shops and night spots lure visitors both day and night.
