Conveniently located across the street from the S-Bahn Charlottenburg, the Hotel-Pension Berolina offers a whopping 210 beds at discount prices. Most of the beds are bunked by school groups and budget travelers looking to avoid a "funky hostel" atmosphere, though private rooms are available.
The pension occupies a large apartment complex. Most rooms open onto the building's leafy courtyard. The four-floor utilitarian structure offers bare-basic rooms with high ceilings, yellow walls, clean beds, sinks, blue carpets, and the occasional piece of basic wooden furniture. Rooms for long-term guests are cleaned once a week. Hallways are institutional in a cold, concrete kind of way and the shared bathrooms and showers gave us flashbacks to our junior high locker room: clean, no-frills, and kind of bleak.
But still, the prices are low and the quality of the rooms was acceptable. And the "Russian shop" in the nearby Charlottenburg station is open 24-7 with all tourist necessities.
