Hotel Pension Charlottenburg, an unassuming pension with 19 rooms, has welcomed budget travelers since the 1920s. With slightly worn and old-fashioned trappings and a dynamite location less than a block from Kufürstendamm, this place is charming and convenient. Don’t be fooled by the building’s marble and stucco-bedecked entry hall—this place doesn’t offer more than the simplest of comforts.

All of the pension's singles and doubles have small, tidy bathrooms, telephones, and mounted TVs in common, but the décor is unpredictable. One double we visited features a curved brass bed set against retro green paisley wallpaper. (Fortunately for these rooms, printed wallpaper is back in style!) Our favorite double boasts white lacquer beds and side tables, an antique armoire, a framed abstract print, and pale mint walls. Some rooms bear traces of the original ceiling moldings; others include a divan that doubles as a third bed.

Breakfast, usually included, is served in a surprisingly grand room that leads to a huge balcony overlooking the street. If you’re in need of a drink later in the day, you can grab a cold one from the bar in the cramped lobby-lounge. Go for a bottle of Bavarian beer that the current owner “imports” from his southern German home.
