Chris and Klaus König run the 19-room Hotel Pension Columbus, located five houses down from the Ku'damm, with personality and a sense of humor. At the Columbus, you become a guest in their home. For instance, you're served breakfast in the German country-style breakfast room ("We serve you," Chris says, "and you can eat as much as you wish!"). Furthermore, artwork was done by the couple's sons—charming and personal.
The hotel is located in a grand, century-old apartment, and traces of a splendid past remain in certain rooms. For instance, Room #3 was the family's chapel and still boasts the decorated ceiling to prove it. Furniture and décor range from antique (with nicely restored stucco ceilings) to last-week (new pine beds), but all the rooms seem exceptionally well kept.
The building has been a hotel since 1936, when Berlin hosted the Summer Olympics. Chris's parents took over the hotel in 1970, and Chris and Klaus took charge in 2001. What a difference a family makes.
