We don’t make a habit of recommending cookie-cutter chain hotels, but there is something about the Hotel Ibis Berlin Mitte, a member of the biggest, cheapest, and most consistent two-star hotel chain in Germany, that we really love. Not only is it steps from a tram that will whisk you to Prenzlauer Berg and Alexanderplatz, it also boasts adept customer service delivered by a young, well-trained staff. Housed in a glassy high rise directly next door to a gas station, the clean, streamlined rooms overlook either a cemetery or busy Prenzlauer Allee.
The 198 rooms reflect the Ibis’ most recent “look” and feature attractive parquet floors instead of the wall-to-wall carpeting of the past. Expect sizeable beds and a curvaceous desk chair. As usual, the rest of the furniture—a desk, closet and bench seat—is built-in and market-research functional. Tiny tiled bathrooms are big enough for one person at a time.
The breakfast room, not to mention the bar and lobby, are chic in a chain hotel kind of way. As is standard for the chain, rates drop on the weekend and if you book more than 20 days in advance. A breakfast buffet is available for €10.

About the Ibis Hotel Mitte neighborhood
Once the heart of East Berlin, Mitte was the former East Germany's showcase hood. With the grand Unter den Linden boulevard running right through it, Mitte's grand buildings, government offices (including the awe-inspiring Reichstag), major museums, embassies, and side streets are undeniably majestic. On the north side of Mitte, cool shops and night spots lure visitors both day and night.
