Mitte's Backpacker Hostel is another legendary Berlin hipster hostel, offering 100 beds in a former hat factory, a short walk to Oranienburgerstrasse. Since 1997, Mitte's Backpackers has been tucked away in this courtyard location, dishing up rooms with fun, individual style. Artistsand backpackers throughout the years have left their mark on different rooms, creating unique sleeping atmospheres, such as the Indian room, the Honeymoon Suite, and the Marlene Dietrich room.
We enjoyed the Arabic Room (#344) with its gold walls, painted Arabian designs, Arabic script borders, starry skies, and painted ceilings. We won't even dive into the Underwater Room. The name speaks for itself.
Along the hallways, random bits of conceptual sculpture hang from the ceilings, and installation pieces populate the landings. Bedroom doors and entire bathrooms are used as canvasses by these hostel painters, who leave their mark with flair. The art is part of the whole experience, and we think it's great.
Downstairs, the lounge is typical "Hip Hostel 101," with a cool, young staff manning the bar and cafe, while disposing cherished advice about what to do and where to go. You can even rent bikes through the hostel, so you'll be prepared to tour the city "Berlin style!" The same management also runs the equally fun Bax Pax Hostel in Kreuzberg, which we also review.
