Frau Schwartzer of Pension Alexis runs what she calls an "old Berlin pension." We'd suggest replacing "old" with "grand." The marble staircase leading up to the pension is striking. Alexis' enormous dark wood antique buffet, occupying one wall of the pension's roomy breakfast room-cum-lounge, harkens back to another age. Being able to have breakfast in a room of this grandeur alone makes staying here worthwhile.
Amenities at Pension Alexis are basic. There are no televisions or telephones in the rooms. The four rooms are high-ceilinged and huge, outfitted with appealing modern retro furniture. Stand-alone wardrobes, funky lampshades, and lounge chairs are all prime examples of this retro spirit. All bathrooms are shared.
What you get from a stay here is the flavor of Berlin's past glamour and a friendly, comfortable, and roomy place to lay your head for the night. Furthermore, Alexis' proximity to the Ku'Damm and the Zoo Bahnhof puts it more or less in the center of one of Berlin's most popular hoods.
