Lisbon’s Do-It-Yourself Walking Tours

It’s perfectly obvo that we’re big fans of Web sites that help you see more for less in Europe. So imagine our delight when we happened across the Lisbon Tourism Office’s sleek new Web site, full of city guides and tourist information.

The self-guided city walks in Lisbon section of the site is our favorite. The tourism office provides information for walking tours of Baixa Chiado, Bairro Alto, Estrela, Castelo Alfama, and Belem. Each of these ‘hoods is on any tourist’s must-visit list.

Walking directions (“Start by taking the Santa Justa Elevator (1) up to the ruins of the Carmo Convent (2), destroyed in the 1755 earthquake…”) are greatly aided by color maps detailing every move.

Well done, Lisboa!

I clicked onto the walking tour for lisbon lin but what i saw was all in a language other than english. would like to take a self guided walking tour of lisbon but need info. can you help. thanks

Great walking guides! I will use them and the maps next week.
Tips
1. Use Google Chrome as your browser. A tool bar will come up saying do you want translation from Portuguese to English? Click yes (or always translate)
2. On the Visit Lisbon homepage, look for the tab ‘Where to go’ and click ‘Walking Routes’
3. Click on the 5 listed – they are in small font, so wait for Google Chrome to translate, cut and paste to Word and boost the text size and definition.
4. The maps are in a little square at the bottom of each walk. Open up and click to increase size. Cut and paste and you have you own free Walking Guides!
