By Florencia and Rafa in Madrid—The classic hamburger is making a comeback in Madrid. So, in addition to trying the Spanish sandwich equivalent to this American standby—like pork with cheese, or ham and tomato or even veal with fried peppers—you might be tempted by one of our city’s very own sliders. And when you are, we’ve got you covered.

Here are our top three favorite hamburger shops in Madrid.

1) Alfredo’s Barbacoa
Calle Lagasca 5 (Metro: Retiro)
Tel: (+34) 91 576 62 71
Web site

Situated next to Retiro Park, this place was opened in 1981 by a friendly Texas-raised New York transplant whom you can still bump into in the restaurant (hint: he’s the one wearing cowboy boots and a hat).  Fresh and basic ingredients, top notch quality meat and affordable prices make Alfredo’s the compulsory pilgrimage destination for hamburger fanatics in the city. Our favorite patty? The Super Alfredo burger with cheese and bacon.

Take note that locals frequent the place on weekends when it can get quite chaotic and packed, so it’s more than advisable to call and book a table in advance for a Saturday or Sunday.

Open: Tuesday to Friday from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. to 12 a.m.; Saturday and Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m.; closed on Monday.
Average price: €20

2) House Burger Bar
Calle Andrés Mellado, 75-77 (Metro: Islas Filipinas)
Tel: (+34) 91 399 41 88

With one of the best quality-to-price ratios in town, House Burger Bar offers more than 15 different types of hamburgers.  Try the Frenchburger with melted brie cheese, or if you have a fried food craving, get the Onionburger (comes with onion rings on top). Finally, the Gourmetburger with duck foie gras is decadent. The burgers here are pretty sizable and are served with homemade french fries and coleslaw.

This place focuses on what they do best and service is no different. Waiters are exceptionally friendly, and as House Burger is not located in any cool, touristy neighborhood, you’ll almost always be able to grab a table on the spot.

Open: Everyday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
Average price: €15

3) Peggie Sue’s
Calle de Jesús 14 (Metro: Antón Martín)
Tel: (+34) 91 389 67 00
Web site

With several restaurants sprinkled throughout the city, Peggie Sue’s takes you back to the 50s American diner right in the middle of Madrid. Complete with old school decorations and even a working jukebox over the bar (operated with 20 cent coins), prices at Peggie’s are very reasonable. Food is excellent and has that comfort food homemade touch that we love.

There are four hamburgers to choose from here, the “James Brown” being our personal favorite, and the burger buns are baked daily using Guinness beer as the special ingredient. Milkshakes are also worth mentioning, as well as the extensive dessert menu. Just be sure to make a reservation here or arrive early (Tip: In Spanish time, 1 p.m. should be OK) to avoid having to wait.

Open: Sunday to Friday from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. to 12 a.m.; Friday and Saturday until 12:30 a.m.
Average price: €25
