With processions and festivities planned through Easter Sunday, Holy Week (“Semana Santa”) in the South of Spain is the best chance to bear witness to the country’s rich religious heritage.

While Sevilla, the region’s cultural capital, sets the standard for the week’s processions in sheer scope and size, you’ll find the streets of most town centers in Andalucía packed with faithful participants. They’ll be waiting for a grand procession of sacred scenes to float by, courtesy of religious groups that have worked, practiced, and raised funds throughout the year for the big celebration.

The processions will be held throughout the week, but they’ll be at their most dramatic and noteworthy on Thursday and Friday, when a delirious mix of candles, statues, flowers, and incense will turn narrow old town streets from Granda to Malaga into a celebration to behold.
