Ryanair vs. EasyJet: Fight On

Tuesday, June 19th, 2007

Today, Ryanair fires off another salvo in its summer price war with easyJet by offering three million one-way flights for just £10 apiece, including all taxes and charges. The three million promotional fares are good for travel in July, August, and September.

Meanwhile, through Wednesday, easyJet continues to hawk £14.99 one-way flights good for travel between June 27 and August 15.

Ryanair provides a nice list of point-to-point promotional fares, along with various applicable restrictions. Because we like actually locating touted low promotional fares—versus merely knowing about their technical existence—we appreciate Ryanair’s route pricing lists. EasyJet, note the utility of said front page fare lists.

New Jet2 Routes

Jet2

Plucky UK low-cost carrier Jet2 is launching two ski season routes to Chambéry in France—one from Edinburgh; the other from Belfast. Both routes will kick off on December 15. One-way fares (including taxes) will start at £28.99.

We like the way that Jet2 continues to quietly expand and evolve. The airline doesn’t overwhelm with bluster and fuss—it just does its thing. Next to Flybe’s bizarre decision to ban its passengers from eating food they’ve brought aboard flights (not to mention last summer’s staffing shortages at another leading British airline, which resulted in a whole mess of cancellations), Jet2 continues to emerge as a reliable UK low-cost alternative.

Air Flash: Ryanair Makes It Easy; easyJet Expands

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Through midnight in Western Europe, Ryanair’s crazy absolutely free flights remain bookable. The airline is now providing a link from their homepage to a PDF listing remaining promo flight availability. We’re not sure how regularly the flight availability list is being updated, but we do like having some of our research work done for us for a change.

Meanwhile, easyJet kicks off its Edinburgh-Milan route today, with a lowest roundtrip fare of £42.98.

Today easyJet announced two new routes: Dortmund-Edinburgh and Dortmund-Thessaloniki, bringing the number of destinations served by the airline in and out of Dortmund up to 13.

Dortmund-Edinburgh begins on May 30, and Dortmund-Thessaloniki begins on May 31.

The flights went on sale earlier today, though they’re so new that they’re not yet showing up on the easyJet route map.

Other low-cost carriers serving Dortmund include Air Berlin and Wizz Air. There’s very little competition on individual low-cost routes in and out of Dortmund, with the three low-cost airlines serving a remarkable 26 destinations ranging from London to Antalya.
