Hemus Air (+359-2-981-8330), also known as “The Wings of Bulgaria,” and Virgin Atlantic signed an agreement last year to provide low cost travel between Sofia and certain U.S. cities, including Boston, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco.

Right now, during the low season, fares can be as low as €300 roundtrip from the US to Sofia, before taxes. Taxes will double the fare, but even with the doubling you’re looking at a decently-priced intercontinental flight deal.

Hemus Air also offers RT flights between Sofia and cities like Berlin and London for about €200, not bad for a weekend in one of southeastern Europe’s newest hot spots.

In addition, Italian low-fare carrier MyAir flies to Sofia from Bologna, Milan, Rome, and Venice; Wizz Air flies to Sofia from Rome and London; Germanwings flies to Sofia from Cologne-Bonn; and Sky Europe flies to Sofia from Bratislava.

In other words, it’s time to visit the capital of one of the EU’s two newest member states.
