It is not necessary to rent a car to get around central Bratislava. Most areas of interest to tourists are located within Staré Mesto, or the Old Town. Those sights beyond the Old Town aren't too far afield, and they can be reached easily by public transportation.
For extensive day trips and travels farther afield in the region, however, a rental car will very likely come in handy.

To get the best price, reserve a car before leaving home. Ask for an all-inclusive rate with full insurance and unlimited kilometers. Many of the less expensive rental cars in Europe will have neither air conditioning nor roll-down windows. To get the best deal, shop around, reserve ahead of time and pay in advance.
