Hotel Tatra is a business-class hotel—one of many in Bratislava that makes the grade in generic terms but doesn't offer much in the way of charm or design. The hotel's 86 rooms are unstylish. There's no socialist brutalism here, just a surprisingly expensive hotel with a lack of attention to aesthetic matters.
The lobby is an exercise in overdone 1980s boldness, with fake ivy-like vines draped over an austere, fortress-like reception. Happily, Tatra's rooms go for a more natural vibe, sporting an almost woodsy atmosphere. You can expect light hardwood floors and tons of caramel-hued wood furniture. Reproduction Oriental carpets grace the floors. The overall effect is that of a country inn, which makes for a disconcerting juxtaposition with the austere, gray, modern building as well as the very urban placement of Hotel Tatra on one of Bratislava's busiest streets.
Though the rooms are reminiscent of a simple ski lodge, Tatra does have business hotel facilities, including a meeting room, an office center, and an on-site restaurant and bar. And the location is quite wonderful, technically in Staré Mesto, just a 10-minute walk to the Old Town's heart.
