In many cities, a place like the Hotel Danube wouldn't make the EuroCheapo listings. Put plainly, it's not a cheap hotel by any stretch of the imagination.
Bratislava, however, is a city with a real dearth of moderately-priced hotels. In this context, the Hotel Danube has much to offer. It is stunningly well located—situated across the road from the Danube River itself at the foot of Staré Mesto. (It's also close to the departure point for the hydrofoil to Vienna.) And the 265 rooms and common spaces benefit from the hotel's many amenities, which include air-conditioning, conference rooms, a fitness center, sauna, and spa.
The Danube's top-notch bathrooms save the day somewhat. There are lovely black stone sinks and counters, spotless tiling, and clear glass shower dividers. The bathroom lighting is also quite nice.
Given the nightly rate for a standard "business" double, one might expect something amazing or at least edgy in room aesthetics. Disappointingly, the rooms are extremely average, not luxurious by any stretch. Expect gray and white wall-to-wall carpets, utilitarian bed units, grass-hued bedspreads, and unexpectedly bright chairs. These furnishings are neither luxurious nor, it appears, even well-matched. In place of a mini-bar, the Hotel Danube offers a mini-basket brimming with candy and other snacks. The hotel's breakfast is expensive.

About the Park Inn Hotel Danube neighborhood
Staré Mesto is the hub of charming, old Bratislava. It's a knot of winding alleys, charming Medieval, Baroque, Gothic, and Neo-Renaissance imprints, and inviting cafes and bars. There are a few architectural injections of modernity in Staré Mesto, though these are the exception to the rule. For those familiar with Vienna, Bratislava's Staré Mesto can feel like a miniature variation on a Habsburg theme. Staré Mesto's architectural highlights include the Neo-Renaissance Slovak National Theatre, the Romanesque-Gothic St. Martin's Cathedral, and Michael's Gate, the city's medieval gateway. The legions of weekend break tourists lured to Bratislava by the city's increasing buzz spend most of their time in Staré Mesto and the adjacent Hrad (Castle) district. Happily for locals and visitors alike, Staré Mesto is full of hip bars, cool cafes, and folksy restaurants. The downside to this buzz: During high season, this neighborhood's warrenlike alleyways can get quite crowded.
