Situated above a grocery store on Ezelstraat, a five-minute walk north of Markt Square, the Kwalito certainly wins the "Proximity to Fresh Produce" award (B&B division). The bed and breakfast is operated by the very friendly Kris and Els Derpoorter-Clement, who opened the grocery story in 1995 and added the three guest rooms five years later.

The Kwalito’s three non-smoking rooms are spacious and cheerfully decorated, with a mix of warmly painted walls and fun, eclectic furnishings. Color schemes range from creamy to tangerine to blues, and are complemented with animal prints and other fun touches (including the words “Good Night” painted on the wall above the bed). All rooms provide kitchenettes, and Els drops off a basket of fresh fruit as a welcome present to arriving guests and leaves a bottle of juice in the fridge.

A large room downstairs accommodates five, is equipped with a private patio, and has a full tub in the bathroom. Upstairs, our favorite room boasts its own private terrace with a view of the neighboring English Church.

At the bottom of the steps, the Kwalito offers a computer with free online access.
