Located off the busy Boulevard de l'Empereur, Le Bruegel Hostel—with 135 cheap beds—is a hotspot about ten-minutes, by foot, southeast of the Grande Place. Of all the hostels we visited in Brussels, Le Bruegel had the most central location in an area brimming with activity.
Rooms are no-nonsense, but always clean. Cherry-wood bunk beds are in most doubles and triples have single beds. Funky art, in the form of colorful graffiti or framed bandes desinées (comic strips) accent each floor's television lounges and common areas.
In addition, Le Bruegel has a basement nightclub that stays open as long as there are people up and about. If you're still looking for something to do, there's a bowling alley down the street.
The staff is exuberant and eager to please its guests, often young travelers and backpackers. That said, all ages are definitely welcome.
Besides the location, another thing that sets Bruegel apart, is their ample meal service, with two on-site chefs preparing three meals a day. Breakfast is included in the hostel price, but for €9 you can also get lunch and dinner—almost always a three or four course meal with drinks included. This has proved to be a popular option in a city where a waffle can set you back &euro ;5!
On your way in or out, take note of the majestic church across the street, where the painter Pieter Bruegel and his father are buried.
Note: Curfew is 1 a.m. and there's a lock-out daily from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
