The Cristea family has run the two-star Hotel A La Grand Cloche Hotel, smack in the center of Brussels, since 1966. Considering its location, a few minutes’ walk to both public transport and major sightseeing attractions, this 36-room property is a good value.
Guest rooms are a tad dated but very clean, with beige-and-orange color scheme, which, to our tastes, didn’t quite blend with the dark blue carpets. The coffee-colored wooden beds and dressers are nothing to write home about, but they do the job. Some rooms have bulky old television sets, while others have small flat screens. Some rooms have coffee and tea facilities (ask ahead) and all have free Wi-Fi. The bathrooms in the doubles and triples are spacious. Single rooms only have showers, and share adequate but dated toilets.
The Grand Cloche is housed in an 1840 building reminiscent of a Southern European resort hotel. Its stately peach exterior goes well with the tree-lined Place Rouppe on which it sits, merely blocks south of the Grand Place. The tiled lobby, too, promises faded old-world splendor.
The management is especially proud of the hotel’s “huge breakfast.” And rightfully so—the free buffet’s selection is generous and varied, and the guests, mostly middle-aged Europeans, seemed very satisfied.

About the A La Grande Cloche neighborhood
The undisputed tourist epicenter of Brussels, Grote Markt, or Grand Place, is an impressive square facing the medieval Town Hall. The always lively neighborhood is sprinkled with hotels, cutesy cafés, restaurants and chocolate shops. A maze of cobblestoned alleys leads to the opera house, a commercial drag or the gay district, depending on which turn you take.
