The three-star Hotel Welcome is a small hotel, carefully maintained and lovingly managed by its gregarious proprietor and manager, Michel Smeesters. It’s clear from talking to him that the hotelier genuinely cares about his guests, and he offers them not only a warm welcome but also a wealth of tips. His enthusiasm shows in the décor as well.
Each of the Hotel Welcome’s 17 rooms is a labor of love, decorated with handpicked items Mr. Smeesters has brought back from his travels around the world. Minimalists take note: These rooms are opulently embellished, with colorful murals and myriad artifacts everywhere. “Room Zanzibar” is an azure explosion of Tanzanian handicrafts; “Room Morocco” is an Arabian fantasy of ornate furniture. And if you can't settle for one theme, the “Silk Road Suite” features authentic curiosities hailing from far-flung places from China to Italy. Every room features air conditioning, cable television and free Wi-Fi. The en-suite bathrooms are immaculately clean and feature colorful, intricate mosaic tiles.
When Mr. Smeesters first told us, “I want your readers to know two things,” we braced ourselves for a sales pitch. Instead, we got this advice: “Never pay more than €10 for a cab ride from the main station, and remember that taxes and tips are included in prices all over Belgium.” When it comes to hoteliers, Mr. Smeester’s is a hard act to follow.
It's also hard to beat the hotel's location, facing the lively, picturesque Place Sainte Catherine, just steps away from happenin' boutique shops and a quick stroll away from the Grand Place. For all but the strictest of minimalists, the combination of homespun enthusiasm, great location and lavish décor makes Hotel Welcome a place worthy of a splurge.

About the Hotel Welcome neighborhood
Located a 10-minute walk northwest of the Grand Place, Sainte Catherine area has come a long way from its days a medieval shipping port. Anchored by the imposing Sainte Catherine cathedral and the calm alleys that radiate from it, this is a fast-changing neighborhood where you might see a rundown townhouse holding out against a wave of boutiques, galleries and restaurants.
