The three-star City Hotel Pilvax is perched on a quiet pedestrian street off of the bustling Váci utca. Part of the modern Taverna Hotels & Resorts chain, it features numerous amenities at reasonable rates.

The hotel’s 32 rooms are functional, though they offer as much character as a budget furniture showroom. Light, functional tables made of balsa wood blend in with freshly painted museum-white walls. Chairs padded with colorful fabric match lampshades. At least the amenities are noteworthy: All rooms are equipped with radio, satellite TV and air conditioning.

Additional pluses include a hearty buffet breakfast, laundry service and 24-hour reception. And, the Pilvax was the only hotel we visited with its own outdoor café.

The Pilvax is within a ten-minute walk of the Hungarian National Musuem, the Central Synagogue, and the Inner City Parish Church. Metro stops are easily accessed.
