The Kristal Hotel is located inside a charming grand old house in the quiet Buda neighborhood of Gellért-Hegy. It's a wonderful place to find respite from central Pest, and the hotel's spacious balconies and terraces provide an ideal place to take advantage of the peace and quiet.
Less than a 10-minute walk from the Hegyalja út stop on the 61 tram line, the Kristal feels like a home-away-from-1970s-home. Room furnishings have all the drama of a dated soap opera, and include chifforobes with a leopardskin-like spotted pattern and somber beige and brown curtains and carpets. Large windows and outdoor terraces perk things back up, as do the large balconies. Five of the 18 rooms have their own balconies, which are impressive. The balcony off one double room we visited was larger than the room itself.
Despite their valiant marketing efforts, the Kristal is definitely off the beaten hotel path. Even so, we know we're not the only ones seduced by its charms. During our May 2007 visit, we were unable to take photographs of the rooms. All were either occupied or being cleaned.
