Offering reasonable rates and a hip location off Andrassy út, the Medosz Hotel is good for guests willing to overlook garish design for the sake of a bargain.
Taking up most of the northwest side of the Jókai tér, the Medosz Hotel is less than a five-minute walk from the happening Liszt tér, the heart of numerous It cafés and restaurants. The Opera House is less than a ten-minute walk along the Andrassy út and the city central park, with all it has to offer, is a 15-minute walk to the northeast.
Front rooms have a view of the green Jókai tér and, when the trees are leafless, the Liszt tér to the south. Room furnishings aren't as picturesque. Standard beds sit atop worn parquet flooring. Matted, unraveling Turkish rugs poke out from underneath chairs designed to occupy an E.R. waiting room. En suite bathroom walls are covered with bright teal tile, which looks as if it would be home in a 1960s color palette.
The funky asthetic might not appeal to every taste. But with a location that allows guests to stumble home from nearby cafés or return from a night at the Opera House sans taxi, it seems silly to nitpick over the hallway's burnt-orange carpeting.
