The Yellow Submarine Youth Hostel is the hostel of choice for more social backpackers and others hankering after a goulash community dinner or two.
The first room we saw during our April 2007 visit to the Submarine was the hostel's enormous, well-scrubbed kitchen, which has a bright view of Teréz körút. Pale yellow walls and white window trim give the culinary quarter a summer house atmosphere. The common kitchen is the place where continental breakfast is served every morning. It's also the site of the hostel's weekly communal goulash feast.
A communal atmosphere permeates rooms. Wooden bunk beds match lockers. Walls are freshly painted, ceilings are high, and windows are large.
Located on a bustling Budapest corner, the Yellow Submarine Youth Hostel is 500 meters north of Liszt tér's nightlife scene. Historic movie houses, which are very popular in Budapest, run along the Teréz körút along the way to the tér.
Last time we checked in with the Yellow Submarine, staff members were eager to tell us about the tours they offer guests. Yellow Submarine's air-conditioned tourist bus ferries hostel guests to Lake Balaton and into Eger wine country, among other places.
