Sharing a parking lot with Central Station, the Hotel Astoria is a hop, skip, and a jump from Tivoli Gardens. At first glance the Astoria appears to be a drab modern brick building. However, once you step inside, the hotel turns out to be a historical landmark with plenty of nice surprises.
Erected in 1935, the Astoria's look was fashioned in the funkis style. The hotel has 94 rooms have modern amenities and Miro-inspired artwork, created by a previous owner, is seen throughout the interior.
When we last visited in (fall of 2005), Camilla Harder was kind enough to show us around. Rooms have sturdy walls (good news for those with noisy neighbors), a minibar, radio, cable television, and a self-regulating heater. Most bathrooms have a tub. Soundproofed windows block out noise from passing trains.
Rooms on the top floor, open to a long balcony, where tourist can practice train spotting up close. Guests can also follow the silver streaks from the breakfast room where a full buffet is served. And, we're not talking a mere continental breakfast here. Think fruits, vegetables, cheeses, cereal, breads, and an array of jams served in bowls; not in little, sticky packets.
Goddag, Copenhagen!
Please note: Hotel Astoria is closed temporarily due to construction in the surrounding area, and will reopen April 1, 2007.
