Situated on the north side of the Liffey a few minutes from the Garden of Remembrance and O'Connell Street, the family-run Waltons Hotel is perched at the upper end of the EuroCheapo scale. We think it is well worth the splurge.
Run by the Walton family, the hotel shares a protected Georgian building with the well-known Walton's Music Shop. Each of its 56 high-ceilinged rooms is stylistically different, with a loose musical theme providing a shared motif. For example, framed scores of Irish folksongs grace room walls.
All of Waltons's rooms have private bathrooms, and a handful have tubs in addition to showers. Our favorite is a family size (quad) room with mint-colored walls, olive drapes, and forest green bedspreads—all under the dominion of an elegant chandelier.
The effect of the decor is dignified but never stuffy, full of quirky little touches like the illuminated "MIND THE STEP" sign alerting guests to an unexpected split-level hallway. Waltons's guests include lots of repeat business customers, families, and, surprisingly, a ton of Finnish tourists.
