Low-cost carriers took off with the deregulation of Europe's domestic travel markets in 1997. Prior to this move, national governments were empowered to reserve access to national airspace to their favored airlines.
The big daddy of them all, Irish low-cost carrier Ryanair maintains the most awe-inspiring route map and tends to add new destinations (and cancel unprofitable routes) at blistering, breakneck speed.
