Ireland's legacy flag carrier Aer Lingus has been morphing over the course of the last several years into a low-cost airline. Flying to major airports across Europe, and as of recently North America and Dubai, Aer Lingus is dependable and well established. Fares can be quite low, though advance purchase fares don't quite compare to those offered by that other Irish low-cost carrier, Ryanair.

Upside

Airline is well established and serves major airports.

Downside

Connections beyond Europe are not very good, thus dulling one distinctive draw. Frequent delays and unhelpful staff are common complaints.

• Carry-on: One bag up to 10 kg (7kg for regional flights), plus one personal item.
• Checked: €15 per bag booked online (€20 at airport). Plus-fare tickets get one bag free. Flex-fare tickets include two checked bags. Max 9 bags with combined weight of 20 kg. Over 20 kgs, fees apply. No single bag over 32 kg (70 lbs) is allowed.

To/From Europe

• Carry-on: One bag up to 10 kg (7kg for regional flights), plus one personal item.
• Checked: One bag under 23 kg free (two free with flex ticket and three free in business class). Additional bags must be booked for a €50 fee.

Check-in and Ticketing

Aer Lingus offers online-check in for most flights and is available from 30 hours in advance until 2 minutes before the scheduled departure time.  Times vary for US airports.  Checked baggage is accepted from passengers who check-in online.

Departure: Dublin, Ireland (DUB)

In Brief: Dublin Airport is located 10 km (about 6 miles) north of the city. It's a major base for both Aer Lingus and Ryanair, and also handles several Centralwings routes. In terms of sheer numbers, it's one of the most budget airline-friendly airports around. Transportation: Public buses cost between €1.60 and €1.90 to traverse the distance between central Dublin and the airport, depending on how far the journey in question is. Airlink buses, which travel to Dublin's Central Bus Station, cost €6.

Arrival: Milan, Italy - Linate (LIN)

Linate Airport is one of the two major airports of Milan, Italy, along with Malpensa International Airport. Due to its proximity to Milan (compared to Malpensa), it is mainly used for domestic and short-haul international flights. Its name comes from the small village where it is located in the town of Peschiera Borromeo. Its proper name is "Airport Enrico Forlanini," from the Italian inventor and aeronautical pioneer born in Milan.

Location:

Linate Airport is located 7 kilometers (4 miles) east of Milan in the Segrate Municipality, and the field is located for a large part in the Peschiera Borromeo Municipality.

Transport:

•Rail: There is a bus service to the Milan underground, connecting at San Babila Station, as well as service connecting to Milan Central Station.
•Bus: There is bus service available to the city center and the Piazza San Babila underground station Linate and Malpensa airports are connected by highways and by service buses. Check online for the schedules of buses to Linate and buses from Linate.
•Taxi: Taxis are available from the airport to the city center.

Service:

A bank and bureaux de change are located on both the ground and first floor of the terminal, and a post office on the ground floor. There are self-service restaurants on the first and second floors, a restaurant and a tea room on the second floor, and bars and snack bars throughout the airport.

There are numerous shops selling a wide range of goods can be found throughout the airport, and the duty-free shops are located in the International Departures. There is also a chapel located on the first floor. Other facilities include first aid, a pharmacy, a travel agency, and a hairdresser.
